Walmart EDI Requirements: Everything Suppliers Need to Know

March 15, 2025 8 min read Retail Compliance

Walmart is the world’s largest retailer — and one of the strictest when it comes to supplier compliance. Missing their EDI requirements can mean chargebacks, account suspension, or removal from the supplier program.

Required EDI Transaction Sets for Walmart

  • 850: Inbound Purchase Order
  • 855: Purchase Order Acknowledgment (required within 24 hours)
  • 856: ASN (required within 30 minutes of carrier pickup)
  • 810: Invoice
  • 860: Purchase Order Change
  • 997: Functional Acknowledgment

Walmart’s AS2 Connection Requirement

Walmart requires AS2 (Applicability Statement 2) for all EDI transmissions — no VAN option for most transaction sets. This means you need a properly configured AS2 server or a managed EDI provider who maintains the connection.

RetailLink Registration

All Walmart suppliers must register on RetailLink (retaillink.walmart.com), Walmart’s supplier portal. This is where you’ll find purchase orders, compliance scorecards, and performance data.

GS1-128 Label Requirements

Walmart’s carton label requirements are among the most detailed:

  • SSCC-18 barcode in Zone D
  • Specific font sizes for human-readable content
  • Ship-to store or DC zone in Zone A
  • Vendor and department information in Zone B

Compliance Scorecard

Walmart tracks your EDI compliance and ships it to a vendor scorecard visible in RetailLink. A score below threshold can trigger vendor review — and a conversation with your buyer you don’t want to have.

Spring Systems has been managing Walmart EDI for suppliers since the early days of RetailLink. We know their requirements inside and out.
